Signs your clutch needs replacing
A clutch wears a little every time you use it. Most last many thousands of miles, but driving style, towing and stop-start traffic all shorten that. If your car is doing any of these, get it looked at before it lets you down.
- Revs rise, speed doesn’tThe classic slipping clutch, usually worst in higher gears or climbing a hill.
- High biting pointThe clutch only bites right at the top of the pedal travel.
- Judder when pulling awayA shudder through the car as the clutch takes up, often worse in reverse.
- Whirring or rattlingA noise that changes when you press the pedal points to the release bearing or flywheel.
- Heavy or spongy pedalA pedal that’s stiff, soft, or doesn’t come back up properly.
- Hard to select gearsCrunching into gear, or reverse and first reluctant to go in.
- Burning smellA sharp, acrid smell after a hill start or heavy traffic is the clutch overheating.

Inside a clutch
What we replace in a clutch job
A clutch replacement usually means a new clutch kit: the clutch plate, the pressure plate and the release bearing, fitted together. We check the flywheel while the gearbox is off, because a worn dual-mass flywheel will quickly spoil a new clutch.
Flywheel
Bolted to the end of the engine’s crankshaft. The clutch plate is squeezed against its face. Many cars have a dual-mass flywheel, which can wear out along with the clutch.
Clutch plate
The friction disc in the middle, splined onto the gearbox input shaft. Its linings wear a little every time the clutch slips, until it can’t grip.
Pressure plate
The cover and diaphragm spring that clamp the clutch plate against the flywheel. Weak springs can cause slip and judder.
Release bearing
Presses on the diaphragm fingers when you push the pedal. A worn one whirrs or rattles, often when the pedal is down.

How much does a clutch repair cost in Norwich?
Our published price for a clutch replacement is £450 labour, plus the parts. The parts are the part that varies: a clutch kit for a small hatchback costs far less than one for a van, a 4x4 or a car with a dual-mass flywheel.

Can you replace a clutch at my home?
Yes. We’re a mobile mechanic, and clutch replacement is one of the jobs we do on customers’ driveways. We need a flat, firm, safe space with room to get under the car and remove the gearbox, which a driveway or a private parking space usually gives us.
If there’s a reason your space won’t work, we’ll tell you when you call, not after we arrive.
How do I know if my clutch is going?
The common signs are:
- the revs rise but the car doesn’t speed up (a slipping clutch)
- the biting point is right at the top of the pedal
- a judder when you pull away
- a whirring or rattling noise that changes when you press the pedal
- a pedal that feels heavy, spongy or sticks

How long does a clutch replacement take?
It depends on the vehicle. The gearbox has to come out, which is quicker on some cars than others. We’ll tell you how long your car will take when you book, and whether a part needs ordering first.
Should the flywheel be replaced at the same time?
Sometimes. Many diesels and some petrol cars have a dual-mass flywheel, which wears out too. When the gearbox is off we check the flywheel, and if it needs replacing we tell you and give you the price before we fit it. It’s far cheaper to do both together than to take the gearbox off twice.
Is it safe to drive with a slipping clutch?
It’s best not to. A slipping clutch gets worse, can fail completely and leave you stranded, and it makes overtaking and hill starts unpredictable. The heat can also damage the flywheel, turning a clutch job into a bigger bill. Get it looked at as soon as you notice it.
